This divine bird appears in legends of Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Said to live for 500 years, the Egyptian phoenix was said to be as large as an eagle, with brilliant scarlet and gold plumage and a melodious cry. Only one phoenix existed at a time. At the end of its life-cycle the phoenix builds itself a nest of cinnamon twigs that is ignited by the Sun, both nest and bird are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix arises. The new phoenix embalms the ashes of the old phoenix in an egg made of myrrh and deposits it in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis, the city of the sun god, Re. As a sacred symbol in Egyptian religion, the phoenix represented fire and the sun, which dies each night and rises again each morning. The phoenix is also said to regenerate when hurt or wounded by a foe, thus symbolizing immortality. Phoenix brings a message of peace, renewal, good fortune and rebirth. Tears from a phoenix are said to heal wounds.
To “rise like a phoenix from the ashes” is to overcome a seemingly insurmountable setback.
